Post Stupid supercharging ideas....... Reply with quote
You know them times when your sat infront of the TV but your not really watching it because your mind is wandering? I had one of those last night, it just popped into my head how hard would it be to supercharge my merc? and now it wont leave! It couldnt be that hard, it`s got mechanical fuel injection so it would automatically (hopefully) pick up the extra air through the metering unit and adjust the fueling itself so no programming or wiring issues, it hasnt got aircon so there is a space on the engine for the charger to fit also more room at the front for an intercooler, there is loads of room under the bonnet for pipework etc, I mean how hard could it be?

shouldn't be too hard

mounting the charger and finding a suitable charger for a 3.0 enign will be the issue, the little cooper s eaton jobs most people use just wont be big enough

Yeah that was my next question, I can probably make up some brackets to mount the charger easy enough but without going down the top fuel dragster route where do I find a charger big enough to move 3.0 litre`s worth of air? Was thinking Mercedes SLK or C class Kompressor? You can get one in 2.3 litre flavour and I know a good merc breaker, not looking for mega power just something to annoy BMW drivers with on the motorway ....................... Oh! and on the cheap lol.

you're only gonna wanna look at 5 about PSI to start out so something like a merc 2.3 charger which prob runs 8/9psi would give you the sort of pressure you need.

Carb suitable for boost would be better than the standard carb, and as a budget method of controlling fueling a rising rate afpr

need to custom fabricate a crank pulley too (read as weld part of another onto the front) and ideally get it balanced!

Righty then, apparently the 2.3 kompressor charger isn't man enough for the job of propelling the S class at a higher velocity so needing fresh ideas. Its not a carb its a fuel metering unit, roughly translated this is very old school technology (read as no technology at all) it`s mechanical fuel injection, no wires, the fuel pressure is supplied constantly by a pump, the metering unit does a similar job to a modern air mass meter except it also has built into the unit the fuel delivery process, I cant explain what it looks like, if you have seen one you will understand if you havent it will be completely incomprehensible how a car can run on something that looks like this! however its a very simple process, it needs to know what temp the intake air is, it needs to know what temp the engine is, it needs to know how much air is going into the engine and from there it will bang the required amount of fuel in, its not sequential it fires all the injectors at the same time, mine is a later KE jetronic with an ecu but so far as my reckoning goes the only thing this can control is idle speed and base idle mixture, the biggest problem I have is this was a budget idea and its turning out I cant do it on a budget due to the size of charger i`d need to feed a 3 litre engine, it`s neither a big nor a small engine so it transpires no one really caters for it charger wise, back to the drawing board but there is a cartain cheeky little 560SEL looking promising at the mo 5.6 litres of long wheel base mercedes may suffice without a charger lol
