Butterfly braces/Rail Stiffeners

More particularly the rail stiffeners due to size and simplicity.
Not being an expert, but reading a lot of other peoples stuff i can't understand why people are not making their own and/or for other people.
I know the best ones are made out of stainless steel which increases the cost, rather than mild steel due to weight and their location under the car, taking knocks etc
But a bit of hammerite or similar with regular checks on mild steel should protect it. I know its heavier but its low down under the car so it's not as important.

Anybody on here able to knock these up ? Stainless or mild ?
I'll post a pic up after i've eaten for those who have no idea what i'm talking about.

i must be honest, iv'e thought about this, we'll have to get our heads together, we've got a full workshop to use when ever with grinders welders drills ,taps  & dies, i also have contacts with powder coating companies,

they look as though they,ve been laser cut, might be a bit of a challenge tryin to replicate one, would give it a go though,

Oooh ooh a guy on Nutz has just said he's just bought one o these and it fits perfectly. issues are with interference with zaust.

I have also been concidering making my own,as I am a blacksmith, plater, welder by trade. We have folding facilities at work etc and form shapes like this all the time....but since having a big argument with the boss I don't do any homework or ask him any favours.Even if I paid for materials etc he would still class it as a favour and expect 50 favours in return.....If I WERE to make my own I would use stainless or
galvanised sheet

Bosses eh

ya could deffo make one, but the quality & fit wouldn't be as exact, also to make it out of stainless or ally there wouldn't be much change from £80.

i think it would have to be sommat we practised before commiting

AWNield had a butterfly brace on the car (before he sold it!)

Dunno if it was purchased or made

I'm almost certain Adams was a flyin miata brace but he said it made a massive difference to stiffness.

Think the Ideas great and same as Chris I think the rails would be laser cut. Only thing I could maybe suggest is having the complex parts made up by an engineering company. Buy the other parts in their respective section if possible ie angle, t bar flat bar etc and weld/ bolt together. You would be best off getting hold of an original first to use as a pattern!!

Heard nothing but top reports from everyone on Nutz that has these.

Hi all...

I've not posted for a while but I've been 'lurking' - I hope everyone's keeping well.

I had FM rails and butterfly brace on mine - fitted it myself.  I got it from from a company called Tracktec Tuning (down south) but I don't think they're about anymore - it cost £375 delivered.  It made a massive difference to the ride/handling of the car.  All the sharp shocks were soaked up by the car, the car felt far more 'solid' and definately more pointy.

When the braces were delivered (my mate and I got one each - he had a 5 at the same time) we commented that the rails would be easy enough to make (if you've got the right kit).  The butterfly brace however, that would be more complicated as they're made up of 3 parts in total and some of the angles were quite complicated.

If you need anymore info/need to pick my brains, let me know.

Just openin up this thread again. After looking under car last week been looking into this again on various sites and think it would be possible to do something ourselves. Could do with getting car on a ramp again and taking some measurements!! Only possible problem looks like it needing to miss exhaust compared with ground clearance
