As far as I'm aware, the thing is structurally sound, but the rear arches are mostly shot (with nice sharp edges!)
My plan is to cover them with some black gaffer tape

Sorry Jim, but have just so laughed! We are such a failiure as a club!!! Mind you, I think it's because we all own Mk 1s and they are getting old now!
At least yours did not fail in any catastrophic way!

PASSED!!!1!!!
took ALL day yesterday to do the stupid adjusters on the rears though!
and I incurred some light panel damage (massive dent) in the rear wing while doing the job
