Ooops, I did it again!

Diving home from my mates house last night, lights dim, stereo goes on and off and dashboard lights fade, battery light comes on. I nursed it to somewhere safe with no lights working and kept the car running but no lights! I could have got home but with no lights

So left it there and jump started it today, it went and it's now back home.

So folks, is it the alternator or summat to do with the electrickery?

If it's the alternator, is it easy to put a new one on?

Getting a bit fed up of being the damsel in distress and having to be rescued!
andburg

weird, we checked and your alternator was pushing 14+v through!!

alternator is fairly easy to do but i'm perplexed now

oh, I don't know what is wrong now. Thought you had tested the alternator and it was working which was i was a bit flumoxed. Something is not working in the charging system or maybe all blue fives have the problem that the alarm drains the battery.

Anyone shed any light on this?

also, I am charging up my battery and can't decide if it should be on sealed or on normal. Help!!!
roadsterbloke

is the fan belt still in one piece, on the alternator??
Froglet

will have a look today. ta
Froglet

Right. Jump started the car when we went to rescue it and got home ok. Tried to start it today and it started no problem. If the alternator belt is shaped in a v shape and flat on the top then it still in one piece, although it is crumbling a bit.

Anyone free this weekend to come and have a look?!!! Can't work out where the problem is.
Froglet

Right, my dad has said if we can't fix the blue streak, then I can take it to a garage to be sorted. Anyone know onny?

Ta!

I need it fixed otherwise I am stuck in the sticks forever!

Froglet

Damo, you could be the eye candy!!!

Andy, have a nice time!

Right, I have an interview on Monday or Tuesday in Hull so I need my car. This is a bit of a plea for help, Saturday afternoon or Sunday. Failing that, I will have to charge up the battery before I go and hope I can get back!!!! lol.

Thank you!!!

I couldn't help even if i'd wanted too ! but i will come along for the drive if Chris is going over.   Give him some company
Froglet

Thanks guys. Chris, you are a complete star. It seems really unfair that you seem to be the club's designated mechanic! I was not expecting you to do it! I am popping over to the local garage to see if they can fit me in, cos mum and dad have said they can pay!

But if they can't fit me in until next week I might call on you next weekend if anyone is free. Evenings are difficult cos I am having to lodge suring the week so I can get to work!

Tonight is my only free evening which is short notice!

My parents think you lot are brill!

ive been giving some thought, to the electrickery problem you've got,

given we know the alternator is charging at 14volts, & the fan belt is on and ok, the wiring appeared to be fine when me & andy were there the other week,

however  we put on a battery that for some reason unknown to us had been placed on charge, that said battery only lasted 6 days before letting you down, could it be the battery that is at fault & is not holding a charge, maybe it has a dead cell or two, i know that it bump started the next day, but it had been left overnight with nothing pulling power from it, and drove home during the day with no lights on ect, this would not be unusual,

my first idea    would be change the battery for a new one, then we can start eliminating if the fault re occurs, cos no one knows any of the history behind the battery me & andy fitted for you,

you could save hours of fault finding by doing this, & batteries are relatively cheap compared to some major components & having to pay auto electricians an £80 diagnostic fee.

see what ya think & let me know, maybe andy may have some thoughts on this, i can get over this weekend if you want help getting & fitting a battery ect
Froglet

Cheers mate.

The battery that was on first was relatively new and was no problem on my car. Don't know about the second, it just seems funny that both have been drained. I have a mate who is an auto electrician so he is going to have a look at it.

hmmm curioser and curioser!

Thank you loads for the offer, I may still take you up on it.
roadsterbloke

when the car was at ya dads did he keep it garaged, ie- without the alarm on, is it only since you've had the car that the alarm is in full use, it could be dodgy & draining the battery.
Froglet

No, he kept it out and the alarm was on, but I was wondering if it had that problem...probably copied Clive's!!!!!!

Everybody/thing copies me !

Yes they do !!

They do !!

I'm tellin ya they do !!
Froglet

Hooray!!!! it's fixed and I had such a nice drive today, feel really chirpy now!

It broke down four times on the way to my mates, one just outside Donny station, not in the tunnel thing though!!!

Chris, you were right.

I checked the alternator belt, and it was ok, but on the way to my mates, it broke properly and was not going round. Replaced the belt and fiddled with the alarm too, and it seems to be behaving. But he said alternator was very tight, so might need a new one sometime!

Thanks to all you lot who helped

Sooooooooo glad she is sorted!
roadsterbloke

glad to hear it fi
Damo

Great news!!

Another successful diagnosis by SY5s*

*I wish I could take some credit!!
dj..john
