Overheating (re-occurring problem)

Remember when my car was belching out steam from the expansion bottle?
(The night we were going to some random pub in Brampton and ended up in Ecclesfield)

The radiator was bone dry but there didn't appear to be a leak. Also, the head gasket was OK (no creaming!!)

I topped it up that night, and it has held perfectly even since.

Well....until this morning that is.

Same thing happened on the way to Ecclesfield (spooky) this morning, only I managed to park up before the overheating.

Filled the rad up at dinner time and it was fine when I drove home at 4pm

Any ideas?

Any one else whilst I wait for Clives gem of wisdom?

Could it be an air lock in the heater matrix. This sometimes causes probs. It could also be the thermostat that is stuck or sticking closed and causing the engine to boil up at random.

Hope this help whilst you wait  for Clives gem of wisdom. LOL

Cheap option? thermostat... expensive option... heater matrix...

Also check for leaks around the pipes notably the two pipes that go through the bulkhead on the right hand side of the engine bay... the rubber is a few years old now so may be perished... Leaks will be easy to spot as there will be brown crap around where the leak is... also look at the undertray for crap collection... wont tell you where the leak is but will show that there is one present...

Only other thing It could be might be the seal on the water pump. again, look for brown crap around the pump and down the side of the engine.  If there is any air in the system, fill the tank back up, start the engine and turn the heater control to HOT and put the fan on MAX.  Leave the top off the expansion tank and allow the engine to get hot.  If there is any air in the system, this should allow it to escape. Also squeeze one of the hoses as this allows the air to come out as well.

Best of luck.

Damo,

Make sure you've got an OEM radiator cap fitted as well.  Apparently the after market ones are about as much use as boobies on a frog.

Original radiator?  Could be knacked/blocked - when mine was knacked there were no signs of leaks, but I was losing water (through the evaporation/steam I guess).  Replacing the radiator is a piece of wee wee.
